Identify and Describe at Least Six Markwt Segments free essay sample
Customers are people who buy products and services from other people (usually companies of one sort or another). What customers think and feel about a company and/or its products is a key aspect of business success. Attitudes are shaped by experience of the product, the opinions of friends, direct dealings with the company, and the advertising and other representations of the company. Irrespective of whether a business customers are consumers or organisations, it is the job of marketers to understand the needs of their customers. In doing so they can develop goods or services which meet their needs more precisely than their competitors. The problem is that the process of buying a product is more complex than it might at first appear. Customers do not usually make purchases without thinking carefully about their requirements. Wherever there is choice, decisions are involved, and these may be influenced by constantly changing motives. Term buyer are ones who purchases goods or services; also called customer. A consumer makes purchases for his or her own use or purpose. A professional buyer makes bulk purchases on behalf of a retailer or wholesaler. A media buyer purchases media space or time for an advertiser. Factors That Influence Consumer Purchasing Decisions Factors that influence consumer purchasing decisions are price, income, credit facilities, reference groups, and need satisfaction, (uPublish. info, 2005-2012). I believe a factor that is most important is the ââ¬Ëneeds satisfaction. ââ¬â¢ According to uPublish. nfo, 2005-2012, Maslowââ¬â¢s theory of motivation suggests that human beings seek to satisfy lower needs and then the higher needs: 1. Physiological needs- this includes the basic needs such as food and shelter 2. Safety- this include shelter and the needs to protect one from danger 3. Affection- these are the needs for one to belong to certain groups or family 4. Self-esteem- these are th e needs for recognition and dignity 5. Self-actualization- these are the needs to realize our full potential As we saw fuel prices rise, there was less traveling involved, thus this affected airline companies and vacation destinations. For the most part, people need to feel secure with basic needs, such as food, shelter, gas, etc. before making big purchasing decisions. A bad example of this would be the housing market. Many banks were lending money to people who could not afford to make the monthly payments. I do not know whether the people knew this or the bankers convinced them they could make the payments. Somewhere they must have felt ââ¬Ësecure. ââ¬â¢ Some factors markets can be segmented are environment, demographic, and culture. For example, it does not snow where I live and it is about 100 degrees until winter. There have been some years where we are wearing flip-flips and shorts in December. It would be ridiculous to have ski wear or extreme winter clothing here. Another example is, Whole Foods Market. Market segment Segmentation refers to a process of bifurcating or dividing a large unit into various small units which have more or less similar or related characteristics. Market Segmentation à ¦Market segmentation is a marketing concept which divides the complete market set up into smaller subsets comprising of consumers with a similar taste, demand and preference. A market segment is a small unit within a large market comprising of like-minded individuals. à ¦One market segment is totally distinct from the other segment. à ¦A market segment comprises of individuals who think on the same lines and have similar interests. à ¦The individuals from the same segment respond in a similar way to the fluctuations in the market. Basis of Market Segmentation Gender The marketers divide the marke t into smaller segments based on gender. Both men and women have different interests and preferences, and thus the need for segmentation. Organizations need to have different marketing strategies for men which would obviously not work in case of females. A woman would not purchase a product meant for males and vice a versa. The segmentation of the market as per the gender is important in many industries like cosmetics, footwear, jewellery and apparel industries. Age Group Division on the basis of age group of the target audience is also one of the ways of market segmentation. The products and marketing strategies for teenagers would obviously be different than kids. Age group (0 10 years) Toys, Nappies, Baby Food, Prams Age Group (10 20 years) Toys, Apparels, Books, School Bags Age group (20 years and above) Cosmetics, Anti-Ageing Products, Magazines, apparels and so on Income Marketers divide the consumers into small segments as per their income. Individuals are classified into segments according to their monthly earnings. The three categories are: * High income Group * Mid Income Group * Low Income Group Stores catering to the higher income group would have different range of products and strategies as compared to stores which target the lower income group. Pantaloons, Carrefour, Shopperââ¬â¢s stop target the high income group as compared to Vishal Retail, Reliance Retail or Big bazaar who cater to the individuals belonging to the lower income segment. Marital Status Market segmentation can also be as per the marital status of the individuals. Travel agencies would not have similar holiday packages for bachelors and married couples. Occupation Office goers would have different needs as compared to school / college students. A beach house shirt or a funky T Shirt would have no takers in a Zodiac Store as it caters specifically to the professionals. Types of Market Segmentation à ¦Psychographic segmentation The basis of such segmentation is the lifestyle of the individuals. The individualââ¬â¢s attitude, interest, value help the marketers to classify them into small groups. à ¦Behaviouristic Segmentation The loyalties of the customers towards a particular brand help the marketers to classify them into smaller groups, each group comprising of individuals loyal towards a particular brand. à ¦Geographic Segmentation Geographic segmentation refers to the classification of market into various geographical areas. A marketer canââ¬â¢t have similar strategies for individuals living at different places. Nestle promotes Nescafe all through the year in cold states of the country as compared to places which have well defined summer and winter season. McDonaldââ¬â¢s in India does not sell beef products as it is strictly against the religious beliefs of the countrymen, whereas McDonaldââ¬â¢s in US freely sells and promotes beef products. Criteria for selecting Market Segments Measurable A segment should be measurable. It means you should be able to tell how many potential customers and how many businesses are out there in the segment. Accessible A segment should be accessible through channels of communication and distribution like: sales force, transportation, distributors, telecom, or internet. Durable Segment should not have frequent changes attribute in it. Substantial Make sure that size of your segment is large enough to warrant as a segment and large enough to be profitable Unique Needs Segments should be different in their response to different marketing efforts (Marketing Mix). Consumer and business markets cannot be segmented on the bases of same variables because of their inherent differences. Bases for Consumer Market Segmentation There are number of variables involved in consumer market segmentation, alone and in combination. These variables are: à ¦ Geographic variables à ¦ Demographic variables à ¦ Psychographic variables à ¦ Behavioural variables Geographic Segmentation In geographical segmentation, market is divided into different geographical units like: à ¦ Regions (by country, nation, state, neighbourhood) à ¦ Population Density (Urban, suburban, rural) à ¦ City size (Size of area, population size and growth rate) à ¦ Climate (Regions having similar climate pattern) A company, either serving a few or all geographic segments, needs to put attention on variability of geographic needs and wants. After segmenting consumer market on geographic bases, companies localize their marketing efforts (product, advertising, promotion and sales efforts). Demographic Segmentation In demographic segmentation, market is divided into small segments based on demographic variables like: à ¦ Age à ¦ Gender à ¦ Income à ¦ Occupation à ¦ Education à ¦ Social Class à ¦ Generation à ¦ Family size à ¦ Family life cycle à ¦ Home Ownership à ¦ Religion à ¦ Ethnic group/Race à ¦ Nationality Demographic factors are most important factors for segmenting the customers groups. Consumer needs, wants, usage rate these all depend upon demographic variables. So, considering demographic factors, while defining marketing strategy, is crucial. Psychographic Segmentation In Psychographic Segmentation, segments are defined on the basis of social class, lifestyle and personality characteristics. Psychographic variables include: à ¦ Interests à ¦ Opinions à ¦ Personality à ¦ Self Image à ¦ Activities à ¦ Values à ¦ Attitudes A segment having demographically grouped consumers may have different psychographic characteristics. Behavioural Segmentation In this segmentation market is divided into segments based on consumer knowledge, attitude, use or response to product. Behavioural variables include: à ¦ Usage Rate à ¦ Product benefits à ¦ Brand Loyalty à ¦ Price Consciousness à ¦ Occasions (holidays like motherââ¬â¢s day, New Year and Eid) à ¦ User Status (First Time, Regular or Potential) Behavioural segmentation is considered most favourable segmentation tool as it uses those variables that are closely related to the product itself. Bases for Business Market Segmentation Business market can be segmented on the bases consumer market variables but because of many inherent differences like à ¦ Businesses are few but purchase in bulk à ¦ Evaluate in depth à ¦ Joint decisions are made Business market might be segmented on the bases of following variables: à ¦ Company Size: what company sizes should we serve? à ¦ Industry: Which industry to serve? à ¦ Purchasing approaches: Purchasing-function organization, Nature of existing relationships, purchase policies and criteria. à ¦ Product usage à ¦ Situational factors: seasonal trend, urgency: should serve companies needing quick order deliver, Order: focus on large orders or small. Geographic: Regional industrial growth rate, Customer concentration, and international macroeconomic factors. Explain why the different types of target consumers are chosen for different? As discussed earlier, the countrys consumers can be divided into so many different consumer groups. Based on which consumer groups they li e in, the consumers will have different needs. Also they will find different things that appeal to them. So before you launch a marketing campaign, you need to identify which set of people does your business cater to? What we mean by this is that you need to know who your customers are? What kind of life do they live? Who influences their buying decision? What kinds of media are they exposed to? How much purchasing power do they have? Etc. Knowing this information, you can target your marketing campaign to appeal especially to this group of customers you have chosen. Many a times, you may find that the product or service you are offering is consumed by not only one group of people. You may find that your product has many varied uses and hence has many varied possible consumers. Because of this you may want to choose more than one group of people as your target market. Your marketing strategy will fail if you try to be everything to everybody. When you make a marketing strategy you have to choose only one group of people and design your marketing strategy so that it appeals to the group you have selected. If you have many groups of people to choose from, choose only the group of people that you can best cater too and will offer you the best opportunities to grow. For example, if you are a small firm that makes womenââ¬â¢s perfumes, your target market could be teenage girls, house wives, rich women who can fford to spend highly on perfumes and other such accessories etc. You could choose any one of these customer groups as your target market. Suppose you choose the rich women group then your marketing plan will be designed to appeal to rich women. The price of your perfume will be high. Your ads will be designed to appeal to rich women etc. These ads cannot simultaneously appeal to younger middle class women also. If you come up with a marketing strategy to appeal to more than one target group of customers, your strategy will not be effective. Your sales will be eaten away by specialist products or specialist marketing strategies. Just consider the case of shampoo. If someone is looking for a shampoo to deal with their dandruff problem, they are more likely to buy a shampoo which says Anti-dandruff shampoo than a shampoo that says, Hair shine, Hair strength and Anti-Dandruff shampoo. This point will be explained later again in more detail. The thing to understand is that the first step to making a marketing strategy is to select the ââ¬Å"target marketâ⬠for who the marketing campaign is to be designed.

Summary of WeVe Got Mail Always Essays
Summary of WeVe Got Mail Always Essays Summary of WeVe Got Mail Always Paper Summary of WeVe Got Mail Always Paper Email has become so entrenched in our lives that it has become the common mode of communication in the workplace, and for some, it has become a lifeline to the world as well. Many of us can hardly imagine life without it. That email enhances as well as complicates our daily business is a given. In Weve Got Mail- Always, Andrew Leonard discusses how email saves time and wastes it, makes life simpler and more complicated, brings us together and pushes us apart. (240-243) E-mail, cant live with it, cant live without it. Con artists and real artists, advertisers and freedom fighters, lovers and sworn enemiestheyve all flocked to e-mail as they would to any new medium of expression. E-mail is convenient, saves time, brings us closer to one another, helps us manage our ever-more-complex lives. Books are written, campaigns conducted, crimes committedall via e-mail. But it is also inconvenient, wastes our time, isolates us in front of our computers and introduces more complexity into our already too-harried lives. To skeptics, e-mail is just the latest chapter in the evolving history of human communication. A snooping husband now discovers his wifes affair by reading her private e-mailbut he could have uncovered the same sin by finding letters a generation ago. Yet e-mailand all online communicationis in fact something truly different; it captures the essence of life at the close of the 20th century with an authority that few other products of digital technology can claim. Does the pace of life seem ever faster? E-mail simultaneously allows us to cope with that acceleration and contributes to it. Are our attention spans shriveling under barrages of new, improved forms of stimulation? The quick and dirty e-mail is made to order for those whose ability to concentrate is measured in nanoseconds. If we accept that the creation of the globe-spanning Internet is one of the most important technological innovations of the last half of this century, then we must give e-mailthe living embodiment of human connection across the Netpride of place. The way we interact with each other is changing; e-mail is both the catalyst and the instrument of that change.

Human Rights Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Human Rights Paper - Essay Example 3) points out, Canada was the first country to adopt an official government policy on diversity. Its multicultural policy, which entered into legislature over thirty years ago, was "Canada's official legislative response to ethnic plurality for a multicultural society (Mahatani, 2002, p. 3). This does not mean, however, that there are no racial and ethnic tensions in Canada but only that the nation is comparatively more tolerant and accommodating of diversity than are many others. If Canada is to maintain relative ethnic and racial harmony it must diffuse the poisoned environment phenomenon which pervaded in the case of Clive Stevens and Robert Symister versus Lynx Industries. In 2005, two black Jamaicans were dismissed from Lynx Industries, allegedly for race-based reasons. The case was brought before the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal. The plaintiffs alleged that they had been subjected to racist treatment by Lynx Industries and its employees. The alleged racist treatment encompassed all of racial slurs, race motivated harassment and racist graffiti on the bathroom walls. The defendants denied all allegations but admitted to the graffiti incident. Their legal representative, however, cautioned that it had been a single, isolated incident. The Tribunal was unconvinced and found that the plaintiffs were not credible. The complaint was, therefore, dismissed. Even though the complaint... Interestingly, the Commission contends that "unlike harassment which requires repeated behaviour, a poisoned environment can be created by a single incident, if serious or substantial enough" ("Racial Harassment and Poisoned Environment," 2008, para 5). The creation of a poisoned environment is contrary to the Commission's Code. Importantly, employers are held responsible for either the prevention of the creation of poisoned environment or for taking immediate action against those responsible for it ("Racial Harassment and Poisoned Environment," 2008, paras 5-6). An environment which has been tainted by racism, even if it has assumed the form of a single incident, is considered poisoned because racial tolerance has been undermined, even violated. Indeed, poisoned environments may very well become intolerable for racial minorities, thereby forcing them to leave. While it is important to acknowledge the Tribunal's findings, the fact of the matter is that Lynx Industries did admit to the presence of racist graffiti on the bathroom wall. Certainly, it did caution that it was a single incident and there was no reoccurrence. The fact of the matter is, however, that it did occur and the Commission considers such occurrences a breach of its policies ("Racial Harassment and Poisoned Environment," 2008, paras 1-2). Within the context of the stated, the Commission's findings appear contradictory to its own guidelines. Indeed, even if one assumes that the defendants were truthful in claiming that the plaintiffs were not dismissed for racial reasons but for their on-the-job performance, it could very well be that the environment had been poisoned to the extent where Stevens and Symister could not perform their jobs to the best of their

Evidence based practice report Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words
Evidence based practice report - Essay Example using on this topic and conducting an Evidence Based Study on it will help me gain more knowledge and understanding on an area that I would like to further venture in. Reviewing the various studies related to this topic will be an effective way through which I will be able to through acquire up to date information on the selected study area, and to further enhance my ability to promote quality health care among the elderly as well as to enhance patient satisfaction (Bastin, 2009). According to Sacket et al. (2007), the professional practice of nursing through the use of obtained evidence through EBP has been found to improve patient care and provision of health services as compared to the convectional nursing practices. Through EBP, nurses are getting to actively take a role in the process of medical decision as they are able to make use of the most efficient and relevant information obtained through research to decide on the right course of action (Mantzoukas, 2007) This report will also appraise and critic the evidence or research studies available on the selected topic of study. Evidence Based Practice has been defined as a means through which clinical problems and questions are solved through the use of up to date evidence in addition to ones professional skills and proficiency as well as through the incorporation of nursing ethics and patient needs (Melnyk & Fineout-Overhault, 2010; Pierson & Schelke, 2009). EBP is based on the view that the development of clinical practices should be done with regard to the existing and most current evidence or facts, theory as well as research. The continuous transformation in the medical sector as well as the day to developments calls for more research to be done. The information collected through the conducted researches serves as evidence to use in practice. EBP is in this case aimed at enhancing the quality and adequacy of health care delivery and practice (Snyder, 2007). The information collected through EBP serves a

Brain Function Essay Example for Free
Brain Function Essay A Neuron is a specialized nerve cell that receives, processes, and transmits information to other cells in the body. Basically, it is the messenger cell responsible for receiving and transmitting information. Neurons are the information processing components of the brain, each part of the neuron is responsible for receiving and transmitting information. Each neuron please do use role in the communication of the flow of information throughout the body. Neurotransmitters neurotransmitter Chemical substance through which one neuron sends a message to another. A neurotransmitter is a chemical substance that helps communicate information throughout our brain and body by relaying signals between neurons. neurons to occur. Numerous neurotransmitters affect the way a person behaves, learns, emotions, and sleep. Some also affecti mental illnesses. Some examples of neurotransmitters which affect our learning and development are; Acetylcholine affects a persons voluntary movement, learning, memory, and sleep. Dopamine affects a persons movement, attention, and learning. Axon An Axon is a long, slender projection of a nerve cell, or neuron, that typically conducts electrical impulses away from the neurons cell bodyà transmiting neuroal signals. The axon is the tail-like part of the neuron where sinformation exits the cell. It helps in the transmit information. The function of the axon is to transmit information to different neurons, muscles and glands. Myelin sheath Myelin sheath is an insulating envelope of myelin that surrounds the core of a nerve fiber or axon and that facilitates the transmission of nerve impulses, formed from the cell membrane of the Schwann cell in the peripheral nervous system and from oligodendroglia cells. Myelin sheaths three main functions include are protecting the nerve fiber, insulating the nerve fiber and increasing the rate and efficiency of the transmission of conduction of the nerve impulse. Dendrites Dendrites are a short branched extension of a nerve cell, along which impulses received from other cells at synapses are transmitted to the cell body. Dendrites are treelike extensions at the beginning of a neuron that help increase the surface area of the cell body. These tiny protrusions receive information from other neurons and transmit electrical stimulation to the soma. Dendrites bring information to the cell body and axons take information away from the cell body. Synapses The area where two neuron connect allow transmission of information to occur from one to the other. The messages flow across one neuron to the next through this small gap which separate the pair. . 1. In order for neurons to properly communicate, an electric pulse must occur. It happens as it travels down an axon to the synaptic terminal where the impulses trigger the vesicles to move which contain the neurotransmitter. It is said that most learning is though to involve the change between neurons and synapse. Learning consists of strengething synapses that are already there or by the creation of new ones. Sometimes, eliminating some helps. By learning new things we must realize that our old thoughts arenââ¬â¢t accurate and replace them with new ones in order to change the thoughts and behaviors we once exhibited. (Bruer Greenough, 2001;Lichtman, 2001; Merzenich, 2001). ââ¬Å"Historically, theorists and researchers have believed that the physiological basis formost learning and memory lies in changes in the interconnections among neuronsââ¬â in particular, in forming new synapses, strengthening existing ones, or eliminating counterproductive ones.â⬠(e.g., Merzenich, 2001; M. I. Posner Rothbart, 2007; Trachtenberg et al., 2002) progress . Cortex cortex Upper part of the brain; site of where complex, conscious thinking processes takes place. It is the large lumpy area that covers the sides of our brains. ââ¬Å"Theà area of the brain immediately behind the foreheadââ¬âthe prefrontal cortexââ¬âseems to be the primary headquarters for working memory and its central executive, although all of the cortex may be active to a greater or lesser extent in interpreting new input in light of previously acquired knowledgeâ⬠(Byrnes, 2001; Gonsalves Cohen, 2010; Huey, Krueger, Grafman, 2006; Nee, Berman, Moore, Jonides, 2008). This is the main area that the learning process occurs. Synaptogenesis Universal process that occurs in early brain development in Which cause the formation of numerous synapses. Being able to think more complex and eddicent thoughts, development change in this brain must be the first thing to happen, which is done by synaptegeneis. ââ¬Å"neurons begin to form synapses long before a child is born.à But shortly afterbirth the rate of synapse formation increases dramatically. Neurons sprout new dendrites in many directions, â⬠¦life. Much of this early synaptogenesis appears to be driven primarily bygenetic programming rather than by learning experiences. ââ¬Å" (Bruer, 1999; C. A. Nelson, Thomas, de Haan, 2006). Synaptic pruning Synaptic pruning is the process when old formed synapses wear away due to universal process in the brain development. A developmental process that eliminates ââ¬Å"nuisanceâ⬠synapses that are inconsistent with typical environmentalevents and appropriate responses. Synaptic pruning, then, may be Mother Natureââ¬â¢s way of making the brain more efficient (Bruer Greenough, 2001; Huttenlocher Dabholkar, 1997; Spear, 2007). Adults and children happen to form new thoughts and synaose based on expierence and new discovery. They replace one thought with the other they learning through these developments. Myelination Myelination is the formation of fatty substance around the axons of the neurons. This is what helps speed up the electrical pulses therefore speeding up the transmission of the messages and information shared between the pair of neurons. As myelin is created over neuron transmissions more quickly, greatly enhancing the brainââ¬â¢s overall efficiency. Myelination continues throughout childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood, especially in the cortex (Lenroot Giedd, 2007; Merzenich, 2001; Paus et al., 1999).

Religious Beliefs in Aeschylus Oresteia, Homerââ¬â¢s Iliad, and Sophoclesââ¬â¢
Religious Beliefs in Aeschylus' Oresteia, Homerââ¬â¢s Iliad, and Sophoclesââ¬â¢ Electra The final and definitive defeat of the Persian army at the battle of Plataea represented the end of an age-long threat to Athens. But the victory was also a miracle, as all the odds were against the Athenians at the onset of the war. While Pericles took charge of Athens after the war and started the advance of democracy, religion also thrived. The rebuilding of the Acropolis and the construction of the Parthenon and its great statue of Athene under Pericles' rule signified the height of religious belief among Athenians. However, the shift in power from the aristocrats to the common men in the new democracy, and the Peloponnesian War and Great Plague that followed the shift, all contributed to a general decline in religious belief. Only a few decades after reaching its peak, it reached an all-time low. This change in attitude among Athenians can be observed by comparing the works of two tragedians, Aeschylus and Sophocles, whose plays were performed in each of these two periods. But e ven with this dramatic shift, it is clear that Athenians remained believers throughout these periods, because religion was, and always has been, a huge part of their culture. The religious view of Athenians before the Peloponnesian War can be best demonstrated by the portrayal of interaction between men and Gods in Aeschylusââ¬â¢ work, The Eumenides. From the first scene, when ââ¬Å"The doors of the temple open and show Orestes surrounded by the sleeping Furies, Apollo and Hermes beside himâ⬠(Aeschylus, 137), one can see that in Aeschylusââ¬â¢ eyes, Gods and Goddesses are not something distant and unreachable, but instead, they are ââ¬Å"realâ⬠figures who will at times stand by our s... ...ardless of how "good" or "bad" they were, and despite constant worship the Gods did not intervene. Having witnessed such horrors, it is understandable that people of those times, such as Sophocles, would have taken a step back and wondered if the Gods were actually there. Having gone through a period as such, it is only natural for even the most faithful to doubt a little, which was evident from the absence of interaction between Gods and men in Sophoclesââ¬â¢ work, Electra. However, it is clear as had been previously pointed out, that while belief in the literal truth of the myths was suppressed, the Gods did live on in the hearts of the Athenians.
